Cabinet of Curiosities
This cabinet is an exploration of transparency, color, and playful interaction. Inspired by the mesmerizing effects of light passing through layered plexiglass, we crafted the doors from overlapping pieces of colored acrylic, allowing light to blend and create new hues that shift throughout the day. This ever-changing display invites curiosity and wonder, transforming the cabinet into a dynamic art piece.
To carry this sense of playfulness into the interior, we laminated a variety of hardwoods in different colors and widths, creating a vibrant, unexpected contrast against the exterior. The outer shell remains understated in rich walnut, allowing the colorful doors to take center stage. For a refined accent, the door frames were sprayed in a brass finish, adding warmth and sophistication to the composition.
The whimsy extends beyond aesthetics and into functionality—each door defies convention by opening in a unique direction. The three doors operate independently: one swings left, the center door folds down, and the third swings right. This intentional deviation from the traditional enhances the interactive experience, making the simple act of opening the cabinet a delightful surprise every time.
Materials used: Walnut wood as body, an asortment of laminated hardwood in a variety of colors and thickness paired with colored plexi for the door panels.
Finish:
Polyurethane finish. (wood)(natural) Bronze spray for frames
After cutting and spraying the frames, we carefully positioned the colored plexi into the slots and secured the corners with glue. A final spray coat ensured a smooth, even finish.
As we assembled the pieces, the cabinet truly began to take shape. The vibrant, layered shelf contrasted beautifully against the rich walnut shell, setting the stage for the final touch—the colorful plexi doors.
